Bendigo is an historic goldmining town with a large heritage precinct.
The name Bendigo originated from a world famous bare knuckled boxer, William "Abednego" Thompson, a shepherd on the Ravenswood run near Bendigo was handy with his fists and became renowned as a great fighter. He lived in his hut on a creek which flowed through the valley where gold was found. It is said that this shepherd, nicknamed "Abednego" lent his name to this rich Goldfield.
After a pleasant two hour drive from Melbourne, your first glimpse of Bendigo is through an avenue of majestic plane trees. Spires from a 19th century cathedral rise about the leaves. In the centre of town, historic sandstone buildings nestle amongst century-old gardens and established trees.
Victorian shiraz has become an icon in the industry. When wine critics like American connoisseur Robert Parker Jnr, the Australian’s Max Allen, the Age’s Ralphe Kype-Powell and James Halliday all start praising a region’s wines, wine lovers tend to stand up and pay attention.
